About the Counselors

Janine Ribeiro, LMHC

I am Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida. My highest degree is a Master of Science. in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida. The bulk of my education prior to that was taken at Florida International University; I am originally from the Caribbean where I complete most of my early education. I have also had additional graduate-level training in parenting education.

I have been working in the Mental Health field in various capacities since 1998. I have served as a counselor/therapist for public and private sector organizations, non-profit agencies, and government-sponsored programs. My work has also included coordinating programs designed to provide services to multi-cultural and economically disadvantaged youth. I believe that my diversity of experiences has provided me with a range of skills and an ability to flexibly approach each client’s unique circumstances.

My approach to counseling is interactive in style and based on the empathic response model, which emphasizes the importance of understanding and coming to terms with feelings. My philosophy of counseling is based on the belief that the client possesses the power to change, and that it is my role to help the client become aware of how to understand and utilize that power. This is a philosophy of empowerment—it accepts the client as the driving force in change. I believe this approach brings about effective long-term results, for the reason that the client discovers how to utilize his/her own inner strengths and gifts rather than having to rely on someone else for solutions to life’s difficult issues.
